RUSSIAN SLEIGH RACES
Sleigh racing is (or was) naturally popular in Russia
where perforce all vehicles go on runners for many
months in the year.
Before the Revolution the Troika team was very
fashionable, This team is composed of three horses.
The one in the centre must be an extremely fast
trotter as he is kept to that pace while the two on
the outside gallop.
Troika driving is a peculiar and difficult art.
and the driver always stands to his work.
The high wooden yoke is a feature of all Russian
harness as is also the absence of buckles, the use of
which would be impossible in winter. Their place
is taken by thongs, generally of reindeer skin.
Collars and harness open at the bottom instead of
at the top.
