This is a promotional poster for Nirvana’s In Utero issued early-1993 in anticipation of the LP’s September release.

Geffen decided to try for “low key” marketing since Nevermind was so omnipresent. This poster was the first thing put out into the ether.

The negative reaction was immediate as retailers and customers found the image offensive. This was closer to the original sleeve design than what became image the band and label compromised for the “winged anatomical mannequin” veering away from the fetus. This compromise is of course, after the compromise that Kurt Cobain relented to not call the LP “I Hate Myself and I Want to Die.” Once, in a far off universe, the biggest musical act in the world did these things.

These posters were immediately recalled and/or destroyed. You’d have to work at the distribution plant, label or retailer to salvage one.

True originals of this so rarely turn up and even bootlegs are scarce because the simplicity of the design makes reprinting with sharp edges very difficult.
