    Notable Features:
This gorgeous item is composed of .800 sterling silver and mahogany wood.
The mahogany wood is a gorgeous red-brown hue, and features natural grain patterns.
This item is a riding whip from the Victorian era.
The silversmith work is museum quality, and features a gorgeous foliate motif in high and low relief.
The foliate motif would have been made using the repousse technique. The repousse technique dates back as far as the 3rd century BC and involves hand hammering silver into beautiful and intricate patterns.
This item is also adorned with hand chased details. The chasing technique involves hand etching precious metals with lovely designs.
The silver portions of the foliate motif are also adorned with 18k yellow gold in some areas. The cool silver tones of the gold are gorgeous against the warm 18k yellow gold hues  of the accents, and every portion of this item serves to bring out the best in the other.
The leather portion of the whip is no longer attached to the item itself. However, this item is intended to be displayed rather than utilized, so this does not affect the overall use of the item at all.
    Damage:
Age appropriate wear. Light tarnish on the sterling silver gives this piece an antique quality which we believe is quite lovely. The leather is not connected to the mahogany portion of the whip, which does not affect the overall use of the item as it is meant to be displayed. The silver is ever so slightly dented in some areas, which is normal for a silver item this age. The central silver piece, which can be seen best in the second photo provided as part of the description of the item, is slightly loose. The piece is secure, and does not move unless one does so intentionally. The leather is split in one place, which is to be expected of an item this age. The price of this item has been reduced to reflect this.
*This listing is for the item only. All display boxes and/or photography props do not come with your purchase.*
    The History
The Victorian era took place from the year 1836 to the year 1901, which was the span of Queen Victoria’s reign. Queen Victoria’s style was undoubtedly influential on the fashions of her country and ultimately led to three distinct jewelry trends emerging from the era. The first of these three styles was the Romantic period. The Romantic period was impacted by the Georgian period, which preceded it. The second period was the Grand period, which was primarily defined by mourning jewelry and the trends surrounding it. The final period was the Aesthetic period. The Aesthetic period was more lighthearted and airy than the previous periods and focused on aesthetic beauty and joy. This era features floral, natural, and feminine motifs, and utilized chased gold designs, enamel, and seed pearls.
The late Baroque or Rococo period prevailed in the 18th century. The period was known for its substantial use of asymmetrical designs, curves, gold, and witty, whimsical themes. Both men and women at court wore sparkling gemstones set in gold during this period, as well as colorless glass pastes and pearls. Colored gems were often highly foiled behind them to enhance the depth of color. Jewelry was often created with naturalistic, floral designs. Rococo jewelry also featured embossed and engraved floral and feather designs on metal.
Repoussé began as an ancient metalworking technique dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, involving malleable metal that was hammered onto the reverse side to create an image on the front. Examples are found all over the world; Greece, Egypt, and even the Hopewell periods in the American southeast. Reverse side hammering was also used to add detail to the front, creating intricate patterns using grooves, indentations, and channeling. The piece was then carefully polished to create a hollow, eye-catching treasure.
Chasing is a metalworking technique that uses a nail-like tool and hammer to hand etch patterns onto a metal surface. This process creates a design that is sunk into the front of the surface using indentations, grooves, and channels. Chasing is thousands of years old and was a very difficult and time-consuming technique that is still used by metalsmiths today.
